The Small Grants Program and its 29-Year Journey in Egypt
Since 1992, the Egyptian Small Grants Program (GEF/SGP) has financed environmental and development projects implemented by civil society organizations registered with the Ministry of Social Solidarity, through a pilot phase and six operational phases.
The program has successfully implemented approximately 355 projects, with funding packages exceeding $9 million.
The seventh operational phase, extending over four years until 2024, is expected to launch this year.
The Small Grants Program in Egypt operates through a national strategy aimed at achieving integration with the National Environmental Plan.
The program operates through a working mechanism that relies on a team consisting of a national coordinator and his or her assistant. The committee develops the program's national strategy, reviews project proposals submitted by associations, approves those who meet the program's technical and financial criteria, and then monitors the implementation of these projects.
No project is funded until the association has obtained the required administrative approval from the Ministry of Social Solidarity to accept the grant.
